Study Tips

Study Tips:

Studying is one of the most stressful things students have to deal with; lucky for you I have some tips that will ease your pain through out the semester:

Keep sticky notes of important things on your wall to remind you, and help you avoid procrastination.
Make up rhymes to help you remember acronyms!Always go to class. The more time you spend with your peers and professors discussing assignments and work, the better off you’ll be in the long run. You will be less confused when you start doing the assignment yourself.
Keep organized by labelling everything and keeping everything in binders.
Study in groups. You would be surprised how much you learn from your peers, and how helpful it can be to hear someone else’s perspective of an assignment.

Tips for first classes

Beginning a school semester can be quite nerve racking entering into a new environment, wondering how your first day of classes will be well I am here to ease your worry. I am going to give you some tips from what I have learned from having been through an entire year as a post secondary graduate. First tip I will give you is: Relax you need to take a deep breath and relax, if you go into your first year all stressed out you are only going to get yourself overwhelmed. I have seen many people drop out the first couple months because they could not handle it. Think of it as high school but just in a bigger classroom, to be honest it actually feels like I’m still in my high school sometimes but every day is non uniform day!! My next tip is do not Procrastination I will say it again do not Procrastinate; maybe you got away with it that one time in high school where you figured out your essay was due the next day the night before but if you do that in college/university well you will solely regret it! Once an assignment is said that it is due on a specific day I suggest that you hand it in on that day before the time you will be given plenty of time to do it so you mind as well get things done early and have time to chill out a bit without having to worry about how you are possibly going to finish your huge assignment you got for a class. My third tip is Make sure you pick your group members carefully it only takes one person to screw over an entire group. Get to know people in your classes and find the ones you can trust. Find someone who is serious about their work. Finally my last piece of advice to you is to have fun. Enjoy yourselves make new friends you are going to be spending a lot of time at your new school for the next couple years of life you might as well start making new friends and building connections for the future. Have an amazing school year everyone!

Starting Off a New Semester

Nervous. Overwhelmed. Curious. Anxious. Excited. These are all emotions that we as students feel when we get back to school after a nice long Christmas break. Fear of the unknown is something that we all feel when entering into a new job, a new relationship, or of course; a new semester.

Here are our individual experiences starting the new winter semester at Sheridan College:

Adeoluwa:

Entering a new school year can be scary, not knowing what to expect. Being told that everything you have learned up till now is different. Teachers are stricter and sometimes even have you thrown out of their class. It's like stepping into a whole new life. So many feelings come all once; feeling nervous, expectant, anxious, and overwhelmed, but when I came in, the environment was not as stressful as I had been told. The people were nice and welcoming, it was a warm, calm environment, the professors were so much different than what I expected. They are tough but comforting. the one thing that was tough was the increase in workload and if you did not meet the deadline as the teacher said Automatic Zero! Procrastination is never our friend but once we get into the post-secondary life it is definitely not your friend.

Cleveland:

Starting a new school can be exciting, meeting new people and seeing old friends from the year before. However, there is a part of you that is nervous as well if you're going to a new campus because there is a chance you might end up getting lost. That is what I feared the most on the first day, I think I went around in circles about ten times before I realized that I was in the wrong building. Lucky for me I asked a few people for directions and was able to figure out where all my classes were.

Allie:

Starting a new semester for me was about fixing what I had done poorly in the past. Improvement is key when moving from semester to semester. Recognizing the areas in which you were weak, and letting them go. Replacing them with more productive behaviors. As well as recognizing what you had done well, and bringing those skills with you. Fortunately, at the end of last semester, we wrote a victory log. A victory log is a log of small victories that you accumulate throughout the semester. I enjoyed this activity and used it as a chance to journal and celebrate my individual wins. Starting the new semester I kept those small successes in mind and began thinking about where I could improve. Showing up on time, and not missing classes was something I needed to work on, as well as broadening my horizons when it comes to group work.

As you can see, every student has a different approach and different outlook when it comes to beginning a new semester. Each outlook is unique and tailored to our different personality types. However you feel is perfectly okay, and there are tons of resources available to help you through the semester.
